Ask ChatGPT to recommend a tool in your category and you will usually get three or four names. If yours is missing, the natural question is what those brands did that you did not. We went through the largest public studies on AI citations to find out, and the answer is not the one most SEO teams expect. The brands that show up most often are the ones people talk about: on YouTube, in Reddit threads, in trade press and newsletters. Backlinks, the metric SEO has obsessed over for two decades, barely register. Below are the seven factors ranked by how strongly the data ties them to AI visibility, what to do about each one, and how Cognizo measures them daily across ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and Grok so you can see which of your changes actually worked.

What is an AI visibility score?

Your AI visibility score is the share of tracked prompts where an AI answer mentions or cites your brand. A mention is any brand reference in the text of the answer. A citation is a source link or credited reference that points to your content. Citation share is the stricter metric because it requires the response to ground a claim in your page. Mention share captures named visibility even when no link is present. Both matter, but they answer different questions: are you being cited as a source, and are you part of the answer at all? The AI visibility metrics guide explains the formulas and thresholds teams use. Cognizo reports both numbers daily across prompts, regions and competitors, so a team can watch named visibility and linked citation share move separately.

How we ranked these factors

We ranked the seven factors by the strength of the measured relationship in the underlying research. The primary evidence comes from Ahrefs' study of 75,000 brands across ChatGPT, AI Mode and AI Overviews, published in December 2025. That study uses Spearman correlations. A Spearman correlation is a score from negative one to positive one that shows whether two things rise and fall together. It does not prove one factor causes another, and the authors say correlation is not causation.

We also drew on Ahrefs' earlier AI Overview brand study, Ahrefs' analysis of 17 million AI citations, Ahrefs' July 2025 study of AI Overview citations, Search Engine Journal's report on Ahrefs' updated analysis, the GEO research paper from Princeton and IIT Delhi, Vercel's analysis of AI crawler traffic, Peec AI's analysis of 30 million AI search sources, Google's guidance on optimizing for generative AI in Search, and Google's announcement of new Search Console AI reporting.

Most of this evidence is correlation from large studies, not controlled experiments, so each factor comes with a test you can run on your own brand. The order follows the strength of the measured relationship, strongest first. Crawler access sits outside the ranking because it is a gate rather than a lever: if AI crawlers cannot read a page, nothing else on this list applies to it. Cognizo's daily tracking shows the result all seven factors are trying to change, which is whether answer engines mention or cite you, so each test has a clear before and after.

1. YouTube mentions

In Ahrefs' study of 75,000 brands across ChatGPT, AI Mode and AI Overviews, YouTube mentions had the strongest measured relationship with visibility in AI answers. A YouTube mention means the brand is named in a video title, transcript or description. The Spearman correlation was about 0.737 across the three assistants, and the view-weighted version was about 0.717. That was the strongest factor in the dataset.

0.737 does not mean every video gets cited. It means brands that appear in many relevant YouTube assets also tend to appear in AI answers. Peec AI's analysis of 30 million AI search sources explains part of this. YouTube was the most cited domain on Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews, and Reddit was number one or number two for every LLM tested. Video and community content feed the answers for product comparisons, tutorials and category questions.

Because YouTube titles and transcripts are crawlable text, the mention does not have to come from your own channel. It can come from a review, a podcast upload, a product walkthrough or a creator comparison. The pattern in the data is broader: AI engines reward brands that are discussed in the media formats people actually watch.

In practice, this means treating YouTube as a source of AI visibility, not only as a social channel. Start with the prompts where buyers ask for comparisons, tutorials or category overviews, then make sure your brand is said out loud and written down in the videos that answer them: in the title, the description and the spoken transcript. You do not need a studio. A founder walking through the product on screen, a guest spot on an industry podcast that posts to YouTube, or a customer webinar recording all count. If ChatGPT keeps pointing to the same two YouTube roundups for a comparison question, that is a clear sign of where a walkthrough of your own would be useful.

How to measure and move it with Cognizo: Answer Engine Insights includes a YouTube and Reddit breakdown, so a team can see which videos and community threads are showing up in AI answers and whether the brand appears through those sources. Cognizo's daily prompt tracking across ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and Grok shows when a YouTube source begins to carry the brand into answers. Prompt suggestions help find questions where video results are already part of the answer, so the team knows which videos to make first. When a new video starts carrying the brand into answers, the change shows up in mention share within days rather than at the end of a quarter.

2. Branded web mentions

The same Ahrefs study puts branded web mentions next. These are mentions of your brand on crawlable pages across the web, outside your own site. The correlation was 0.664 for ChatGPT, 0.709 for AI Mode and 0.656 for AI Overviews. The earlier Ahrefs AI Overview brand study found a matching 0.664 for branded web mentions. That earlier study also showed the size of the gap. Brands in the top quarter for web mentions averaged 169 AI Overview mentions. The next quarter averaged 14. The bottom half averaged zero to three.

One viral article will not do much here. What matters is how often your brand shows up in the public web text that AI systems read, week after week. Peec AI's 30-million-source analysis found the most cited domains were Reddit, YouTube, LinkedIn, Wikipedia and Forbes, and Reddit was number one or number two for every LLM tested. In many categories, being part of forum discussions, editorial lists, news coverage and social profiles is what separates the brands that get named from the ones that do not.

A mention gap audit is the simplest place to start. Take a set of prompts in your category, write down which brands each AI answer names and which sources it cites, and look for the pages and communities that keep coming up. Those are the places where a genuine mention would carry weight. If answers about expense management keep citing two active Reddit threads and one industry roundup, the useful moves are to join the thread honestly where your product is already being discussed and to ask the roundup's editor to consider you next time. Do not manufacture mentions. Google's guidance is explicit that inauthentic mentions are not an effective strategy, because its spam and quality systems still apply.

How to measure and move it with Cognizo: Cognizo reports mention share and citation share separately, so a team can see when the brand is named without a link and when it is cited as a source. Answer Engine Insights classifies page types, which shows whether the mentions answer engines use come from forums, editorial pages, LinkedIn or news. The tracking brand mentions guide turns that visibility data into a process for finding and closing genuine mention gaps.

3. Branded anchor text

Branded anchor text ranks third. In the December 2025 Ahrefs study, the correlation between branded anchors and AI visibility was 0.511 for ChatGPT, 0.628 for AI Mode and 0.527 for AI Overviews. The earlier AI Overview study recorded 0.527. A branded anchor is a link from another page to your site where the clickable text is your brand name.

This is a narrow signal inside a weak field. The number of backlinks to a site barely registers, but links whose anchor text names the brand show a stronger association. The likely explanation is not link authority. It is association. When many pages link to you with your name, and those pages discuss a topic, answer engines can connect the brand to that topic.

Look at the anchor text pointing to your most important pages. If most links say "click here" or repeat a page title, the fix is not more links but better-labelled ones: partner pages, directory listings, author bios and editorial mentions that use your exact brand name. A small number of relevant, readable pages that link to you by name is worth more than a pile of unrelated links. Sometimes the fix is a single email. If two travel publications that AI answers already cite mention a luggage brand without linking its name, asking them to update the link text is a five-minute request with a real upside.

How to measure and move it with Cognizo: Cognizo uses mention share versus citation share to separate unlinked brand mentions from linked mentions, and the content optimization module suggests off-page actions and outreach targets. The technical AEO site audit confirms that the linking pages and the brand's own pages can be read by AI crawlers. The team then watches whether branded anchors begin to precede new citations in tracked prompts.

4. Branded search demand

Branded search demand is fourth. In the 75,000-brand study, the correlation was 0.352 for ChatGPT, 0.466 for AI Mode and 0.392 for AI Overviews. The earlier AI Overview study found 0.392. Branded search demand means the volume of searches that include your brand name, either alone or with category modifiers.

People searching for your brand create a demand signal that AI systems can observe in the same underlying data used by search engines. It is a weaker signal than mentions, but it still matters and it compounds with the other factors. If more people search for you after hearing you on a podcast or seeing a YouTube video, the brand demand and the mention reinforce each other.

The practical move is to judge some campaigns by whether they make people search for you. Podcast appearances, creator collaborations, offline ads and social campaigns all qualify when the call to action is to look you up. Then make sure the searches land somewhere useful: clear pages for your brand plus review, pricing, alternatives and comparison give answer engines something solid to cite when people ask about you by name. A security company that sponsors a podcast series, for instance, should already have its "alternatives" page live before the first episode airs.

How to measure and move it with Cognizo: Prompt Volumes include prompt exploration, keyword research and competitive gap analysis, so a team can see which branded and category prompts justify content investment. Cognizo also reports mention share and citation share across regions and languages, which shows whether branded search demand appears before the brand enters AI answers. Daily visibility tracking across six engines reveals whether demand converts into named presence over time.

5. Organic search rankings

Organic search rankings still matter, but the evidence has become more nuanced. Ahrefs' July 2025 study of 1.9 million AI Overview citations from 1 million AI Overviews found that 76.1 percent of cited pages ranked in the top 10 for the same query. A March 2026 update reported through Search Engine Journal looked at 863,000 keywords and 4 million AI Overview URLs. In that newer dataset, 38 percent of cited pages appeared in the top 10 and 31 percent ranked beyond position 100. Ahrefs said its parsing methodology improved, so the two datasets are not directly comparable, and it pointed to Google's query fan-out.

Each square is 1% of cited pages. Ahrefs changed its parsing method between the two studies, so they are not directly comparable.

Ranking in the top ten helps, but it is not a requirement for being cited. AI systems can cite pages far down the traditional results, and the updated analysis suggests deeper citation behavior is common. This means SEO is still useful, but an AI visibility strategy cannot stop at position tracking.

Keep your highest-intent pages in the top ten, but stop treating position one as the whole job. AI engines break a question into related sub-questions, so the pages that win are often the ones answering the follow-up nobody targeted. Make sure those pages are indexable, crawlable and eligible for a snippet. A legal technology company can rank near the top of Google for its main category and still be absent from ChatGPT's answer, because ChatGPT is pulling from legal blogs and community threads for the questions around it. In that case, an explainer and a comparison page for those surrounding questions will do more than another push on the product page's ranking.

How to measure and move it with Cognizo: Answer Engine Insights includes source and page-type classification, so a team can see whether the pages AI engines cite are product pages, blogs, forums or videos. That data connects organic ranking work to the guide to improving AI search visibility and helps stop optimizing for rankings that never surface in AI answers. The team can prioritize pages that match what the engines already cite for a prompt set. Because Cognizo tracks the same prompts daily across several engines, it also shows when a page that ranks well in Google is still missing from ChatGPT or Perplexity answers, which is exactly the gap the updated Ahrefs data points to.

6. Content freshness

Ahrefs' analysis of 17 million AI citations across seven AI platforms found that AI-cited URLs averaged 1,064 days since publication. Organic results averaged 1,432 days. That makes AI-cited content about 25.7 percent fresher. ChatGPT cited the freshest content, with citations averaging 958 days. Google AI Overviews were the exception, citing pages slightly older than organic results.

Freshness is a modest but measurable factor. AI engines are not real time, but they lean toward content that has been updated or published more recently than the organic average. For fast-changing categories, this can be decisive. For static topics, freshness is less important than clarity and source trust.

Refresh priority pages on a rhythm that matches how fast your category moves, not once a year by default. Update the statistics, examples, screenshots, pricing and dates, show a visible last-updated date, and make sure the new text is in the HTML that crawlers receive. Leave static pages that are already cited alone; changing them for the sake of freshness adds risk without much upside. Where the facts have moved on, though, the payoff can be quick. A supplement brand whose category page cites studies from several years ago is a good candidate: replace the outdated references, add the recent research, update the product names and date the change.

How to measure and move it with Cognizo: Cognizo's Content Optimization recommends content refreshes from citation gaps, and its content agent can auto-publish AI-optimized updates when a page needs new data or a clearer answer. Daily tracking then shows whether the refreshed page starts appearing as a source again, so you know within days whether the update was worth it.

7. Citations, statistics and quotations in your content

The controlled experiment behind this factor is the GEO research paper from Princeton and IIT Delhi. In tests, adding citations to sources, quotations from relevant sources and statistics improved source visibility in generative engine responses by up to 40 percent. That figure is a maximum on the paper's own visibility metric, not a live traffic guarantee.

Answer engines reward pages that make claims easy to verify. A page with a named statistic, a direct quote and a link to the original source gives the model something concrete to cite. A page of general opinion does not.

Start with your ten highest-value pages and give each one at least one primary statistic, one quotable line from a named expert or study, and one clear source link, placed near the top where they are easy to lift. Original numbers are best. If you do not have them, cite the original source rather than a summary of it. For an HR software company that wants to show up in answers about onboarding, that could mean opening its main onboarding guide with a figure from its own customer survey, a short quote from a practitioner, and a link to the full method.

How to measure and move it with Cognizo: Cognizo's Content Optimization generates AI-optimized articles from the citation gaps it finds, and teams can build statistics, quotations and source links into those drafts from the start. Content Optimization also recommends refreshes for existing pages that are losing citations. A team can use those articles to close citation gaps across a prompt set, then watch citation share in Answer Engine Insights.

The prerequisite: AI crawlers have to read your pages

None of the factors above matter if an AI crawler cannot read the page. Vercel's analysis of AI crawler traffic found that none of the major AI crawlers render JavaScript. That list includes OpenAI's GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User, Anthropic's ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, and Meta and ByteDance crawlers. Googlebot's infrastructure, which supports Gemini, and AppleBot are the exceptions. Vercel also found that ChatGPT spent 34.82 percent of fetches on 404 pages and Claude spent 34.16 percent, compared with 8.22 percent for Googlebot. The recommendation is to server-side render critical content so the text, links and data are present in the initial HTML.

Google's guidance says the same thing in plain terms. Pages must be crawlable, indexed and eligible for a snippet. There is no special AI file, markup or text format required. Valuable, unique, non-commodity content with first-hand experience matters more than any technical trick. Sites that opt out of appearing in or grounding generative AI responses receive no traffic or impressions from those features, so the technical decision is visible in Search Console.

Cognizo makes this prerequisite measurable. Technical AEO site audits check crawlability for AI engines, and AI Traffic Analytics shows AI crawler activity and referral traffic. The how AI engines find, rank and cite sources guide covers the full path from crawl to citation, so crawlability becomes a tracked fix rather than a one-time checkbox.

What barely moves your AI visibility score

Backlinks barely register for AI visibility, despite their status in classic SEO. In Ahrefs' earlier AI Overview study, the number of backlinks had a correlation of just 0.218. The follow-up 75,000-brand study described backlinks and URL Rating as very weak. Domain Rating was also modest at 0.266 for ChatGPT, 0.285 for AI Mode and 0.326 for AI Overviews. Number of site pages was about 0.194. The implication is not that you should delete links or stop building them for organic search. It means link volume should not be the main AI visibility project.

Google's guidance reinforces this. There is no special AI file or markup, and text formatting tricks are not the answer. The levers that matter are crawlable content, real mentions, clear citations and freshness. Cognizo's technical AEO site audits focus on whether AI engines can crawl and read your pages, and its daily tracking shows whether mentions and citations move. That keeps teams from spending a quarter on backlink volume when the evidence says it barely moves the AI visibility score.

How to measure your own AI visibility score

Start with Search Console. Google's June 2026 announcement says Search Console is rolling out reporting on impressions from AI features, the pages appearing and countries. That gives you a free baseline for Google AI features only. It does not cover ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot, Grok or Gemini on other surfaces.

Cognizo measures daily multi-engine citation share and mention share. Answer Engine Insights tracks prompts daily across ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and Grok, with Claude, Meta AI, DeepSeek and Google AI Mode available on Enterprise. It reports visibility and share of voice, citation share, mention share, source and page-type classification, YouTube and Reddit breakdown, sentiment, prompt suggestions and ChatGPT Shopping. Teams can pull data through the hosted MCP server or REST API.

A simple 30-day plan works without a large setup. Pick a small set of prompts that your buyers actually ask. Baseline your visibility and citation share across engines. Act on the top two factors from this article first: YouTube mentions and branded web mentions. Then measure again on day 30 and compare citation share and mention share, not just rankings. The Growth plan includes 150 prompts tracked daily, 22,500 responses analyzed per month, 8 AI-optimized articles per month, a content agent with auto-publishing, five of six platforms, MCP and API at $499 per month. The Pro plan covers 350 prompts and 20 articles at $999 per month. Enterprise plans can include all ten platforms. Cognizo is rated 4.9 out of 5 on G2 across 21 reviews.

FAQ

What affects AI visibility the most?

YouTube mentions and branded web mentions show the strongest measured relationship with AI visibility. In Ahrefs' 75,000-brand study, YouTube mentions had about 0.737 correlation and branded web mentions ranged from 0.656 to 0.709 across ChatGPT, AI Mode and AI Overviews.

Do backlinks matter for AI search?

Only weakly. The number of backlinks had a 0.218 correlation in the earlier AI Overview study, and Ahrefs described backlinks and URL Rating as very weak in the follow-up. Branded anchor text is more relevant than total link count, but links alone are not the main lever.

Does content freshness affect ChatGPT citations?

Yes. ChatGPT cited the freshest content in Ahrefs' analysis, with citations averaging 958 days since publication compared with 1,432 days for organic results. Google AI Overviews were the exception and cited slightly older pages than organic results.

Why do YouTube mentions matter for AI answers?

YouTube is one of the most cited domains in AI search. Peec AI found YouTube led on Google AI Mode and AI Overviews, and brand mentions in video titles, transcripts and descriptions are crawlable text that helps AI systems associate a brand with a topic.

Do I need special markup for AI search?

No. Google's guidance says no special AI file, markup or text format is required. Pages must be crawlable, indexed and eligible for a snippet, and unique content with first-hand experience matters more than technical tricks.

What is a good AI visibility score?

There is no universal number because scores depend on the prompt set, region and competitors. The useful benchmark is directional change in citation share and mention share over time against the same prompts and competitors. Cognizo tracks those daily.

How often should I measure it?

Track a fixed prompt set daily and review the trend weekly, because AI answers change from day to day. Search Console AI impressions give a free Google-only baseline, while Cognizo updates daily across multiple engines. Compare the full picture after 30 days of acting on the top factors.

Final verdict

If you only do two things after reading this, get your brand mentioned in the videos and discussions your buyers already watch and read, and make sure AI crawlers can actually read your pages. Backlinks can wait. Then measure, because every brand's mix is different and the only way to know which lever works for you is to watch your own numbers move. Cognizo tracks citation share and mention share daily across the engines your buyers use and turns the gaps into content actions that map to this list. The Growth plan is $499 per month for 150 daily prompts, 8 AI-optimized articles and five platforms. See Cognizo pricing plans and run a 30-day test before you scale.
